Troubleshoot Air Conditioner Issues With These Easy Tips

Let’s face it: air conditioning is as vital to summer as sunshine and swimming pools. That blast of cold air on your face as you come inside from the hot outdoors is nothing short of spectacular. So if your air conditioner stops working, it can feel as if you’ve lost a valuable ally. Fortunately, many air conditioner issues have simple fixes. Try these troubleshooting tips from Merrill Sheet Metal Works to nurse your air conditioner back to health.

Inspect the Air Conditioning Unit

Your air conditioner undergoes regular wear and tear, especially because it sits outside year-round. And as it collects dirt and debris, it’s more likely to lose cooling power, blow warm air into your home, and cause your energy bills to rise. To avoid or fix this problem, check for a small layer of dirt covering your air conditioner. If so, turn your system off, set your hose to a gentle stream, and rinse it clean. If your system is covered in a thick layer of dirt, you’ll need to call a professional to ensure you don’t damage it during the cleaning process.

Check Your Thermostat

If your air conditioner is blowing warm air or not turning on, the issue could be caused by your thermostat. Check to make sure you set your thermostat to COOL and not HEAT—we know it’s straightforward but it’s easy to accidentally set your thermostat to the wrong setting. Also turn your fan setting ON to keep air moving and cool your house down.

Unblock Your Air Vents

Closed or blocked air vents can cause serious problems for your air conditioner. Take a moment and walk through your home to ensure every vent is open and clear of blockages—even in rooms you don’t use often. Closed vents block airflow, cause your system to operate irregularly, and will actually limit your comfort in other areas. It can even lead to a damaged compressor or blower motor problems.

Double Check Your Air Conditioner Circuit Breakers

If your air conditioner won’t turn on, the breaker may have tripped. Locate your home’s electrical panel and make sure the air conditioner breaker is in the ON position. If the breaker tripped, simply flip it into the ON position and test your air conditioner again.

Clean or Replace Your Air Filter

A dirty air filter can cause a number of issues for your air conditioner, such as low airflow, water leaks, a frozen evaporator coil or ice on refrigerant lines, and higher-than-normal energy bills. Check your air filter for signs of clogging and replace it if it looks dirty. If you use a high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter, make sure you clean or replace it at the right intervals—roughly every six months to a year.
